It depends. If the frequencies are crowded in the extra/advanced bands, I'll migrate north to the general band. I'll usually stay parked where I'm at if I have a good run going.

The DX stations tend to be at the lower band edges. So if you're working CQWW phone, you're better off in the extra freqs. If you're working CQWPX phone it's not as critical to get DX, but you want the prefixes for multipliers, working anywhere is ok.

Didn't do much this weekend. The antenna I have here is pretty crappy. I couldn't even hear JA's which usually boom into CA.

You gotta consider that frequencies in contests are like real estate. It's all about location location location, and you have to get lucky to get a prime spot.

I'm sure that most of the General segments of the bands are taken up first, then followed by advanced and extra segments.

For some contests it's a bit different though. For example, some stations in WPX will go just outside of the US phone section so they can score more DX prefixes. That doesn't prevent some people ignorant of the rules to work them anyway, but it does cut down on the stateside contacts and nets a wider variety of prefixes.
