.....you've watched Smokey and the Bandit, even if only for Jackie Gleason's classic lines......
"Texas...don't you know you're out of your jurisdiction?"
"Thats very comforting, but I'm in high speed pursuit! Don't you hear good?"
"I hear perfectly....the fact that you are a Sheriff is not germain to the situation."
"The GD Germans have nothing to do with it!"

Yep yep, Coors beer and clam chowder.
Yep Smokey and the Bandit #1. Great movie - about as American as apple pie. Too bad it fueled the Great CB Craze. They made their money, CB radio got trashed and in a few years CB was all but history. OTOH, it was the only time Sally Field looked that good.
:)
My memory is hazy -- Did the Convoy song ignite the CB craze of the mid-1970's, or did the song grow out of CB's newfound popularity? Chicken.... egg.... ??
All I know is the next wave of hams following the CB boom were the ones who made "QSL" equal "yes" or "I agree."

CB was already growing when Convoy came out. Some of that was due to C&W songs about the great modern cowboy truckers. Some of that was that you could buy rigs almost anywhere. But after Convoy and Smokey, it blew sky high.

Isn't it funny Mike, people will watch the same movie over and over until they reach the point where they know the lines as well as the actors.
Daddy my hat blew off.
I hope your goddamn head was in it.

"Apology accepted. Now.... FO!"
(course, to be proper in those days, the "F word" was drowned out by an air horn when he said it)

Ironic that the movie had more profanity that that, but that one word had to be "edited," so to speak.
S&TB 1 was the best of the lot. #2 was okay, and #3 was a disaster, from the plot to the continuity. I actually didn't see it in its entirety until a good 20 years after its initial release. No wonder Burt Reynolds didn't want to have a major role in it. :-?

I think II was definetely a bad change (it got way too girly, in my opinion) and III was just Jerry Reed and the moviemakers trying to milk a few more cents out of it.
I mean, yeah, I had its "chick flick" moments, but only for a short part of it.
Buford T's outbursts are what made the movies though. Without him in there, they wouldn't be anything better than any other chase movie. Well, not much better, but his role is what gave it more attention than anything else.
Course, we can say Burt was good by staying out of III, but then he went and made the Cannonball Run movies. :) Captain Chaos? Bleh. Almost makes hauling a big ugly fish to the Enos ranch bearable.
