I've had dogs around me all my life. One and only one brand of canned dog food used here - Alpo. It costs more, but it's what Mom & Dad always fed the dogs, so we just continued with it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The dry food, similarly, has always been Purina.
One of the few times I can rejoice in brand name loyalty!
Two more brands are 'voluntarily recalling' their pet foods.
two other companies — Nestle Purina PetCare Co. and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. — announced Saturday night that as a precaution they were voluntary recalling some products made by Menu Foods.
You might want to check the list again if either of these are foods that you use.

They may have found what's causing all the problems.
Rat poison.
ALBANY, N.Y. --Rat poison has been found in pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs, a spokeswoman for the State Department of Agriculture and Markets said Friday.
Spokeswoman Jessica Chittenden would not identify the chemical or its source beyond saying it was a rodent poison.
ABC News reported it was aminopterin that may have been on imported wheat used in the pet food. Aminopterin is used to kill rats in some countries but is not registered for that use in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The chemical, also a cancer drug, is highly toxic in high doses.

Why import wheat?
Or is the gubbermint paying too much for farmers NOT to grow crops?

Well at least you now know that the overly expensive pet foods use the same ingredients as the el cheapo brands.
Thank goodness my cats like Friskies.
Same for us.
I trust Purina.
We buy friskies and deli cat.

Might want to check that, Luke.
Alpo added to pet food recall (http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/Health/story?id=2998366&page=1)
Our dog gets Purina Dog Chow -- dry only. 55 lb bags for about $17 -- one bag lasts him 3-4 months. This is partly because I'm a cheap bastard and partly because a vet once told me that canned food can lead to teeth problems in old age -- something about crunchy food helping to keep their teeth clean. Same thing when we had cats. I'm not sure if it works, but the "old man" is almost 13 now and still gets compliments on his teeth when he goes in for his yearly checkup.
If it turns out that the savings of a few pennies per pound for the imported wheat gluten has killed a significant number of pets, then I hope the companies involved are very seriously punished in the market.

Thanks Rob ... Just checked an open case of 13.2 oz cans ... they're OK. I'll be damned, though ... the new case we just bought has the "Best By Feb 2009" date & the 1159 plant code.
I suppose the store we purchased this at will offer an exchange ...
What a bummer, but man, thanks so much for the heads up!
73,
Luke
