My insurance went up by about $50 for the year. WHich I didn't think was to bad for the times we're in. Of course I haven't had any wrecks or major claims so i'm sure that kept the numbers low.

Mine goes up a little each year, but not much, $10 or so.
Insurance: Legalized Extortion.

Friend of mine in NC has never had a ticket or been in an accident ever for the last 25 years.
He's with Allstate yet pays over 600 dollars a year.
I told him they should buy him a car.
I'm with progressive.
My rates consistently go down every year and their claims service is great.
I've been with them a few years. Even when I worked at AIG. 8)

Expect a change with progressive.
I just got my renewal and it went up $17. Nothing earth shattering considering 2 drivers, 2 vehicles, etc, but the renewal says its due to "increased costs and claims".
Might be because of the recent rash in the news of people taking their car somewhere, torching it, and then claiming it was stolen to try to get out of the loan on it. Its been happening with foreclosures too, allegedly.

Ryan -
You live in Jersey. Nuff said. There is nowhere to go for your rates but down.
I remember when I was working for WMGM TV 40... about to move down there. Good lord almighty.
If it wasn't for the ridiculous home prices.. the auto insurance as just NUTS

My rates aren't all that bad, actually. I pay about $600/6 months which is much less than what I was paying in NYC, and comparable to what my mom pays in Florida.
Home prices are what they are, but as a homeowner, rising prices are a good thing.
High property taxes are the rule here. I pay almost $10k/year in property taxes. The silver lining is that I get to take them off my income taxes.
Where I live isn't really typical NJ. Sure we have mandatory full serve gas, but we don't have the rest of typical NJ where I live.

Yeah... i just know its on the order of twice as much as PA.. at least when i last checked (and its been about 4 years since I worked at WMGM) -- i know there were efforts at the time to bring down rates.
I still smack myself for not buying a house in Philly while in college.. the homes that were going for $30-35,000 during college are now worth up to 8 times that amount.. ugh. :(

$600?
Even here in Modoc, which is the end of the fricking world, I pay $1200/6 months for 6 cars. Granted, one of them is for my 21 year old daughter in Michigan, only two of the cars have comp/collision, which isn't hers, the others are old. The '64 Biscayne and the '63 Rambler cost me almost nothing. It's those damn Fords, the Escape and the 500 which jack up the bill...
If I still lived in the Bay Area, my insurance bill would be at least 40% more. Insurance in CA is ridiculously expensive.
Of course, I'm going to experience this soon enough. We're going to move outside of Sacramento within the next 6 months, I'm going within the next two weeks. Ping pong baby. That's how life works sometimes...

Yeah, sometimes it does.
BTW, did I ever tell you plate is WRONG? Tsk tsk, there was NEVER a Pacific Wonderland plate issued with a 2x2 callsign. But you knew that...
BTW, you ever get on 75?
I have a friend I talk to in Fremont, CA which is about the same distance you are from me, and he's always WAY loud.
Let's get on the air sometime. If you're on tonight after 9 pm, give me a call at 530 664 2321. It would be fun to "chat".
Mine hasn't gone up much in the year I've been with Geico... my renewal is up only about $15... when I switched from Farmers to Geico last year, mine went down from $750/6 mo to 494/ 6 mo. (full coverage $500 deductible comp/collision)
Not bad for Arizona.

Yeah but in NYC/NJ I make >100k/year so the salary difference more than offsets it. In your area I'd probably take a pay cut on the order of $30k-$50k, if I could even find a job.
So I'll gladly pay $1200/year more in insurance to make $30-$50k more in salary.

Eh I forget exactly what you do (TV engineer?).. but down here there are no jobs for that.. so actually you'd make $0 :D
In tech journalism its exactly the opposite. There is no pay difference.
In NYC, with my experience (~5 or so years) average salary is around $55k. I'm making that here in Reading working from home. So in actuality, I'm making far above the average of my peers.
Kinda amusing to me that I make a lot more than just about every person i know that i graduated with.
Journalists really do get paid s**t overall.. you have to love your job, or luck out.

News10 story about people setting stuff on fire to get out of the payments. Didn't know there was that many cases pending where I live (Stockton, CA)

Nope. Web operations manager is more like it. I don't do anything on the TV side, except a few projects with the web video group, plus some XML feeds for the "HD wing" on FBN HD and FNC HD.
I also don't do anything with our IT department either. They're primarily a windows shop.

Yeah I've heard that, I kinda work with journalists, you know... :D
I do make more than my fellow graduates, in HS and college, including two of my HS fellow classmates who graduated from MIT.
And by the way, as much as you hate my employers, they really aren't all that bad. Really. Not trying to sway you any particular direction, but we're a pretty happy family over here.

hahaah Faux News is becoming more Fox News as of late. My respect for them is growing somewhat. I guess they realize with a change in the WH in all likelihood, they better shape up
I still would not work for them unless they paid me an exorbitant amount of money. Although I do hear they pay their journos pretty fairly...

I'm with Farmers now, haven't gone shopping yet to compare prices but will next week. Thanks for all the input. I'm paying $250/6mos now with rather lean coverage for one new Nissan Versa. I have $1000 deductible with close to the minimum required by my state for liability. :shhh

Like I said, don't judge a book by its cover.
I have never had a speeding ticket in my 35 years of driving and never been the cause of an accident. The XYL has not had a ticket in over 18 years and no accidents. My 2 kids at home have never had speeding tickets or accidents.
Our insurance is $420 a month. We have liability on the '89 Toyota and full coverage on the 2002 Acura CL and 2003 Acura TL.
Actually the total on the TL is the cheapest because the boys rates run our premiums through the roof. It don't matter that their records are spotless.
What am I doing wrong? $2500 every 6 months. Over $5000 a year for virtually nothing. Never a claim. To them, this is simply free money.
It's because you live in Chicago, I guess.
This is my 2nd accident, but this one (and the other one) I'm not at fault. I just hope they don't raise my rates as a result. Why should they? I'm not costing them anything.

Male, aged 16-25.
Thats all you need to know. I cost my old man $1200 every 6 months. My brother did the same till we both turned 18. I guess, suddenly, we were more mature. Then they dropped it about $100.
When I went on my own at my 19th birthday I was paying $950 every 6 months. It gradually reduced till at age 25 I guess I was suddenly grown up and it took a big drop.
Just got a new car though so it went up a little, but still $725ish every 6 months. I expect it to be a bit more-we're not at the minimum required and have managed to drop our deductibles down from $500 to $100 on everything.
But thats probably the main reason. Males in that age group just cost....tons.
Insurance is literally more expensive than car payments. We should own the insurance companies by now.
It is pretty disgusting.
