When the tree service comes, I want to put up a 160m antenna, probably an inverted L.

Pros/Cons?

Alot of people like those. Theoretically, they are good because of the vertical polarization. So you will certainly do better by alkalizing the ground at the base of the 'tenner.

Ryan, they are a good choice for getting on Top Band. Mine is a compromise I use on all bands because I need something stealth - it is just 30'H x 75'L. Lots of info on the web, I would recommend sites by W4RNL, N6LF and W8JI. You will need a ground radial system.

Good luck and 73!

So here's the plan. I have a few 90ft trees, and I'm going to tie a rope in them to support my inverted-L up in them.

My friend peter W2IRT has one and he works quite a few stations on topband.

He told me that to get as much of it vertical as possible, because the top section doesn't radiate as much as the vertical.

So that's the plan anyway. I have a bucket truck coming in a couple of weeks, so they'll be able to help with that.

Use lots of radials to keep ground losses to a minimum. Tie them into
any chain link fence and any other metal objects you have.

I am thinking of just scrapping the vertical I have and using its radial field.

The one problem with the Inv. L is that one horizontal wire.
It gives the antenna a relatively high angle horizontally polarized component to the radiaton pattern whcih is great for local work but is wasted for DX. Better in my opinion to install a "T" vertical. The current in the equal length top wires cancel and there is no horizontal polarization.

Same rules apply to the L, T, and all verticals. If you've got less than 60, 1/4 wavelength radials laid out, the antenna isn't performing as well as it theoretically could.

A bow and arrow or a slingshot with a fishing reel attached are your friends. I've used these many times to shoot leader lines into trees, then used them to pull more substantial support ropes up.

Agree w/ posters above: Get as much of the thing "vertical" as you can then lay down a fair amount of radials.

If I recall correctly, Ryan would get in big trouble in New Jersey using a slingshot...not sure about the bow and arrow.

I worked on my loop yesterday, replaced some rope that was looking "iffy" and got sections of it up higher. I taped a slingshot to a fishing reel temporarily and it worked fine.

I would have suggested that he use an AR15, but it's SOOOO hard to tie the string around those leetle beeety bullets...

Not big trouble, but yeah, they're illegal in NJ.

I must have one of these for my M-forgery.

Yes, in a few states, NJ being one of them, as well as several cities including New York. However, the police don't seem to care unless you're using them to cause criminal mischief.

It's a 3rd or 4th degree misdemeanour from what I understand.
