dash of blackcurrant

Sounds great! But could you translate "blackcurrant" into American for me?
:drool

Nevermind. I looked it up. No wonder it's hardly known here. It was banned by the Federal Gov't. My father used to love Blackcurrant Wine, but it hasn't been made in ages.

Believe me, the way my father talked about Blackcurrent wine, I'm still dying to get my hands on some to find out what it's like.

According to WIKI:

Blackcurrants were once popular in the United States as well, but they became extremely rare in the 20th century after currant farming was banned in the early 1900s. The ban was enacted when it was discovered that blackcurrants helped to spread the tree disease White Pine Blister Rust, which was thought to threaten the then-booming U.S. lumber industry.

Seems that in the mid '60s instead of lifting the ban, the Federal Gov't turned around and gave the states the right to lift the ban in their state. DUMB! So, slowly it is getting overturned on a state by state basis.

Blackcurrant varieties today come in a number of disease-resistant varieties. The Scots have been breeding quite a lot of soft fruit varieties for us and they are very successful.
Blackcurrant wine would be particularly good with all that sugar and the acidity. This goes for elderberries and damsons too.
