Received a PM from a user asking me about the 'Spam-O-Matic' statistics at the bottom of the main forum page.

Many of you may not realize it, but Luke and I (mostly Luke) prune through literally dozens of fraudulent forum registrations every week. I'd venture to guess that 1 in 10 registrations are legitimate. In an effort to to cut back on unwanted sign ups, I installed a vBulletin plugin that references new signups against StopForumSpam.com. I'm not sure of it's effectiveness, but that's what we're trying -- for now. This is in addition to tens of thousands of IP blocks that we already have in place. Yeesh.

After you've blocked the entire country of China and Ukraine, start on Africa. Kinda lulz kinda not.

I recently have been receiving spam from a ham in Wales, MW0DNF. Keeps asking me to go shopping at www.ruuso.com which is a known bullshit site.

Sent him a terse, harsh email to knock it off, and even if he's infected to become a spambot without permission, any PC user (and ISP) that allows or ignores this crap deserves a harsh warning, or worse. Eff-tards.

After you've blocked the entire country of China and Ukraine, start on Africa. Kinda lulz kinda not.You joke, but...

[root@quimby ~]# cat /etc/blacklist/countries.txt
RU
RO
CN
TR
VN
UA
BR
VE
PK
PL
KR
SO
KP
IN

This is dynamically updated based on several variables.. but those are all the countries currently being blocked at this very moment.

Damn, don't put .NL in it please....;)I watched "Austin Powers in Goldmember" last night. The references to the English not liking the Dutch were a hoot! Of course the Dutchman had a golden "member" due to an unfortunate smelting accident.

It is bad. A couple of weeks ago, they were all using @aol addresses. This week, Yahoo seems to be the choice. A lot of spammers from France this week, too.

If anyone here invites another to the site, ask them to please use their call sign as their user name. I've blasted a couple of legit users with stupid user names. They could have least put their call in the call sign field in their profile.

People spamming the Island?? ...... could be an ordinary sour grapes attitude being delivered by that other ham related web site...... or I could be mistaken....

I added a couple of things to the registration page that may help.

http://heliosj.iddings.us/images/hamisland-reg.png

First I'm requesting they use their amateur call sign -- we never specifically asked for that (since moving to vBulletin). We're also reminding them not use a free e-mail service, if possible.. and finally, a simple amateur question to ward off the riff raft.

Everyone should know that 14.250mhz is on 20 meters, yeah? :dunno: I even added a fairly polite error msg -- I could have said "if you're too dumb to operate a radio, but still want to join us..."

Suggestions welcome. Thanks!

That would have been my first choice.
