View Full Version : What comes around goes around
Anybody following the rtty thread on the contesting.com cq-contest list. I find it funny that they are complaining about rtty the same way the non-contesters complain about all the contests on the weekend. We should all be thank full for more activity on the bands, no matter what.
Yes and no.
More activity on the bands? Sure. That is a great thing.
Trashing the bands and ignoring the band plans? Bad thing.
For example - RTTY well below 7040, almost down to 7020.
I love contests but I love good sportsmanship as well. I think people who engage in dirty tricks are doing the hobby/service a DISservice.

You mean this one, http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regula ... _color.pdf (http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/Hambands_color.pdf), that list rtty on 7.040 MHz only for DX and 7.080 to 7.125 MHz otherwise, or this one, http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regula ... _color.pdf (http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/Hambands_color.pdf), that says rtty and digital between 7.0 and 7.125 MHz? Last I remember the FCC set the rules and since no rules are being broken when operating rtty on 7.020 MHz if the frequency was clear when you started, no problem.

Bro - I never said ANYTHING about FCC regulations. I spoke of BAND PLANS that contesters routinely ignore because they are gentlemen's agreements.
Ham radio is a self regulating hobby for the most part, but it is because of people with YOUR attitude that the USA has to have and keep mode segregated in the sub-bands!
Band plans!!! (http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/bandplan.html)
I love contests, but I hate when contesters feel that they have to trash the ENTIRE BAND for an ENTIRE WEEKEND.

My view is that if the frequency is clear and your license says you can operate that mode on that frequency what is the problem? If anything, this should be a reason to lobby for more spectrum.

This is not a team player attitude.

We have teams now? Us against them? :-?:

That's a very weak argument at best and not a valid reason for us to get more spectrum.
The "problem" is that ham radio is a self regulating hobby. We are supposed to exercise common sense and work out amongst ourselves how we share the bands. It is more than just obeying the rules. It is about being fair to your fellow hams, who may or may not be interested in contesting, rag chewing, CW, phone or any other ham related activity.

We have one team - hams worldwide. We are supposed to cooperate and share our bands amongst ourselves and be fair to everyone.

And if everyone sat around waiting for somebody to transmit then we would not have any bands to share.
I celebrate each and every signal on the band, no matter what the mode.

So if you don't hear any signals on 29.6 , you should be able to fire up on SSB and call CQ?
