Nothing like file sharing especially when it is not properly secure or over used...
It's great for spreading virus's on windows and exploits and data theft on enterprise networks..
Here is a great example of not doing it right or letting junk apps reside on your network
Mortgage data leaked over file network (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070921/ap_on_hi_te/file_sharing_leak;_ylt=AofOOD.WS9J7jRKjfWUocuMjtBA F)

betcha there's a laptop computer involved ...
my real question: since when is abn amro part of citigroup?
There may or may not be a laptop involved. I strongly suspect someone installed the software on their desktop PC.
Many of these I.T. departments don't lock down the windows desktops, and even when they do, one guy who has a friend in the I.T. dept usually gets their desktop unlocked.
Either that or an admin password leaked.

Ryan is probably correct there was the implication that someone had installed some P2P rubbish on their desktop which created the hole.
Unbelievable there are so many badly configured networks and desktops. People really hate it when you lock down their desktops but it really is important and helpful.

actually, the answer was in the original article:
The file in question leaked through the former employee's home computer, underscoring the challenges companies face in trying to control sensitive information when their employees increasingly conduct business at home and on the road.
no company desktop or notebook involved at all. this is, imho, even worse. i blame the employer and the former employee.
Hmmm. VPN software.
My former employer started to enforce the VPN policy that only company issued (and imaged) computers should be used to log in to the VPN, otherwise you have to use the web based (juniper) VPN.
They had something called checkpoint integrity agent which made sure you had a company issued AV, and also that your patches were up to date.
One of my former cow-orkers' laptop would literally take half an hour to boot. He had so many viruses and spyware on it! He said he gave his kid the computer to play with.

They should go all Web based but even that isn't perfect. I connected to a companies exchange server via OWA and it spread "code red" to my machine, oh well it was time to reimage :x
You can be secure without making it web based only.
Web based VPNs suck dead bunnies through a coffee stirrer.

Best solution is to not allow it but you know how it goes... Done the Citrix thing not bad but user configuration can be a pain especially if they are executives who want everything. Web Mail well that is easy avoid using OWA (Outlook Web Access) but users love it...
Custom in house apps well that isn't too bad and Project Server never gave me any problems so long as you install anti virus and disallow remote file uploads to sharepoint.
My former workplace as well as my xyl's workplace uses juniper for the web vpn.
Of course I resisted any attempt to transition over to the web vpn, so they gave me access to the regular (IPSec) VPN.

Don't know Juniper will have to look it just for the heck of it, not a vpn freak myself. Too bad Windows doesn't really have real ssh functionality. I am sure you can install it but it won't serve any real useful purpose, not the fault off ssh just windows

I just got finished with a 2 day scan and remove session with my dad. He had SpyDefender and all the trojans it installed.
What a headache! My pop isn't the most savvy guy on a keyboard so walking him through it was a major educational experience for him.
I hope the guy who wrote that piece of shite's dick rots off slowly and painfully.
While he uncontrollably shites himself.
Over a very long time period.
Piece of shite.

What you gotta do is right click the "internet" icon and change it to point to firefox. Then just to make it transparent to the end user, you should change the icon (only!) to the IE icon.
I performed that "mod" on many PC's and my repeat calls have dropped way down.

A 12-pound sledge requires about 2 minutes. The computer silly, not your Dad!

His answer to these problems on his old system was to delete random DLL's.
My brother told him he'd have to stop that around the 4th rebuild.

Not so easy from 3000 mi away.
Very easy now. I do it all the time...
(admittedly not with home PC's).

It isn't bad when it is one of your own configurations or some other known configuration. But if it isn't and the user is really worried about their data files and possibly passwords it quickly becomes a real pain. Hey some people are real bad with username username-as-password which is easy on you but sometimes...
Just blowing it away and giving it a default install is easy. But then they want to know how they install their favorite piece of crapware that you know nothing about that might have connection parameters that you know nothing about.
If none of the above then piece of cake heck most can figure that out for themselves. I was going to try supplying some images but I found that quickly became more complicated then I cared to deal with.

Don't worry guys, I don't need directions on how to do it. I am after all Sr level admin!
It's just something I don't want to walk a newbie through over the phone. Talking him through the virus removal was more than enough work!

I know that I sure wasn't lecturing you but I was kibitzing with Ryan a bit that's what conversations can consist of
Well good luck with your long distance support issue I know what fun it can be (*sarcasm*) :D
