I you have purchased a microwave in the past 10 or even 15 years (and who hasn't?), even the cheapest table top model from Wal-Mart, they all have an rotating platter.

(Putting on my best Andy Rooney voice) But did you ever notice that cooking instructions still tell you to cook something for a certain amount of time, rotate it ¼ or ½ turn then cook it some more? Do you think people really do this even though the item is being turned continuously??

Yep, we've had this very discussion at our house in the past few days.

I like how they note that not all microwave ovens are the same and that cooking times may vary.
But, no mention whatsoever that you may not have to risk scalding injury by turning the product at all, with most models. :think

I don't like the look of that green stuff in the pouch.

Speaking of microwaves...why can't the manufacturers put in protection circuitry so you don't blow it when you do something wrong -- wrong stuff in the over, no stuff in the oven? My MW knows enough to turn on the fan if things get too hot, like, when I had nothing in the oven -- so why isn't it bright enough to shut down before it kills itself? I could be cynical and think something about the extra MW's sold. Maybe that's all it is.

the cheap microwave ovens (like the kind college students buy) don't have the rotating platter.

also, the microwave at the office (an industrial model of some sort with an impossible user interface) was purchased in the last four years and also lacks the rotating platter.

i've seen instructions like that and wondered the same thing ... apparently there are still third-world microwave ovens out there.
