It's nothing like Microsoft Error. Give it some time, let them get a Service Pack out and fix some bugs and holes and it will be just fine.

My only quip is that it is a friggin' resource hog!

Biggest issue is that it is a memory pig but it will survive that issue. Everything else is about par for any MS OS that was ever released.

Yeah I have reset everything from windows 2000 (NT 5.0) up back into Windows NT 4.0 interface. Just did that for my nephew a month back most things are in the same place. Turned a few services off and recommended he remove and replace the expired Norton anti virus to Grisoft and bang shaved ofo 250 MB of wasted memory in the footprint.
But even with that Vista squanders about 350 MB on next to nothing, you can only shave off just so much...

Start with this one
http://support.gateway.com/s/software/M ... u591.shtml (http://support.gateway.com/s/software/MICROSOF/vista/7515418/7515418su591.shtml)

You can also right click on the desktop and change the look from Vista look to classic look, looks like Win2K/NT 4.0.
Right click on the desktop, click on properties in "Themes" select "Windows Classic" you save maybe a few kilobytes but you have to hunt less.

Do the same thing for menus this time right click on, what was, the start button and select properties then select "Classic Start Menu" There are other options available there but keep things simple and easily restored till you are sure you like the simplified interface.

Services I won't tell you about till I look at a Vista box, as they renamed some of them from XP, but you can access that via the run dialog.

Shortcut method to get the run dialog is 'Windows Key' + R and put, type, or paste services.msc into it and you will get the mmc app with the services panel open. From there you can set services off most have three states in windows "Start automatically", "Manual", and disabled.

PS: This is considered risky but how risky is it really if you don't use Internet Explorer you eliminate 40% of the risk. If you are using and getting by then most likely you are adult enough to live without this...

How to turn the User Account Control feature off:

1) Click on the Windows logo on the lower left corner (which used to be the “Start” menu);

2) Click on “Controls Panel,” and then select “User Accounts.”

3) At the bottom of the “User Accounts” box, click on “Turn User Account Control on or off”

4) Uncheck the box next to “Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer”

5) Click on “OK”

6) Do this for each user account (if you have more than one in your computer)

6) Restart your computer for the changes to take effect
