I'm running Windoze Vista on my computer and want to use my old printer.
Printer: Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 722C
Q1: Is it possible to use this printer with Vista?
Q2: If so, can someone "point" me in the right direction of where I can find the driver for it?
One of you computer gurus surely has an answer and it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a bunch.

Most likely the driver is still available on the system or at least the Vista CD/DVD
Here is the XP method of adding a printer if plug and play doesn't pick it up...
Your start point is settings make sure the printer is already on and connected
http://www.akroeger.com/printerhowto/printer1.jpg
Then select Printers & Faxes
http://www.akroeger.com/printerhowto/printer2.jpg
You get the add printers dialog click on next
http://www.akroeger.com/printerhowto/printer3.jpg
Decide if you wish to try autodetect or not
http://www.akroeger.com/printerhowto/printer4.jpg
Select the Printer Port LPT1, click next
http://www.akroeger.com/printerhowto/printer5.jpg
You get a list of printer vendors select HP and then select the appropriate model and click next
http://www.akroeger.com/printerhowto/printer6.jpg
The printer is named automatically so click next
http://www.akroeger.com/printerhowto/printer7.jpg
Test is the default so perform the test to verify it worked by clicking on next.

I assumed you had some paper in the printer and if it didn't get jammed it will produce a test sheet.
If you didn't find an appropriate model or it didn't work double check your connection and repeat if needed.
I had a problem with Vista printer drivers and found that they evaporated after a Vista update and driver reinstall. My tech Sam has got drivers to work using XP compatibility mode. Good luck. Vista sucks.

I think the 722C actually predates USB. I've got one around here somewhere -- it's really old. But no, it's parallel port only.

Nah, you're just beta testing.
If it ain't to SP2, you are a beta tester.
Gawd I love MS!

Nah, this is the 722C:

It's actually a manly-man printer for an inkjet. I ran mine for 6-7 years and the only problem I ever had was a run of bad yellow ink cartridges. Replaced it with a HP 8250 about a year ago, but the 722C still works fine.

Did you try installing a printer driver out of the distribution?
The method I described initially is for installing drivers included in the distribution (Windows CD/DVD XP, Vista, 64 or 32 bit)
There is little visual or operational difference to the end user between 64 bit or 32 bit editions of Windows. You install printers in virtually the same way from NT 4.0 to Vista 64 bit. There may be a few minor alterations in the gui but they are all pretty close once you are familiar with them.
Windows comes with some, not all, generic drivers for a large number of printers. HP is especially popular as a brand so you stand a better chance then others with off the wall or really obscure printer brands.
HP's website is located at http://www.hp.com they have owned the domain name and operated a web site there for a very long time perhaps even before 1994....
PS: I did a quick Google search on these terms "vista add printer" got a bunch of hits
This is a copy of one set of written instruction
1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
2. Click Hardware and Sound then Printers.
3. Click Add a printer. This launches the Add Printer Wizard.
4. Click Add a local printer.
5. Use the drop down arrow to select the port. Click Next.
6. Select the Manufacturer of your printer and the model. Click Next. If your printer is not listed, click the Have Disk button. You’ll need to locate the manufacturer-supplied drivers on your computer or disk.
7. Type in a name for the printer. This is the name that will appear under the printer icon in the Printers folder. Click Next.
8. If you want to print a test page, click the Print a test page button. Click Next.
9. Click Finish at the Summary window.
Now 2 shows a subtle difference between what I said but the rest is pretty much the same. I usually change the crummy interface back to something that resembles Windows NT 4.0 as the changes since that version of NT, yeah there all just NT, have not been worth the trouble as they require more clicks and mouse moves to do the things I usually have to do...

The picture I posted was a Laserjet II from around 1993 or there abouts. They were old stovebolt really heavy with metal frame, lots of metal. They were really industrial grade compared to later models by the time someone let me have it, it was about 8 years old and ran until I got sick of moving it
My first inkjet was a HP deskjet 940. I still have it somewhere. It works to the best of my recollection, but I don't use it anymore. Maybe I'll dust it off for photo printing.
Prior to that I used a dot matrix printer - Epson AP2250. Prior to that? I had a commodore 64 and used a MPS803.
Now I actually have a pretty nice 22PPM networked color laser (lexmark c520n).
Oh, btw, I heard that the 720 will NOT work with Vista x64, so Mike, you're out of luck.

Yeah, everything seems to have gone the way of cheap plastic. Some of the new laser printers look like they were designed by some guy in a fern bar. I remember the LaserJet II, though. That was the first laser printer we had at work. It just ran and ran and ran. Then the III's and IV's. We pitched them all a couple years ago and now print everything via networked Xerox machines. I've still got an 820C in my office for color. It's basically a USB version of the 722, and our IT department still seems to stock ink for it, so I'll keep it.

He might be able too I just did a quick look through the "add a printer" process and MS still includes the super generic drivers with XP, you never know till you look though...
The Generic names in XP are
HP Deskjet
HP Laserjet
Amazed MS still supplies those as they can be problematic...
Hadn't looked in a while at that one I have been forced to use them in the past with mixed results. I always prefer the drivers off the MS CD/DVD as sometimes the manufacturers drivers have other subtle problems that MS SP's may break in the future.
Oh never accept a hardware update from MS blindly especially if you originally chose a Non Microsoft supplied driver, you will definitely feel farged by that one
